Students join Free Flow Friday at easyMandarin’s campus located in the center of Shanghai right behind Jingan Temple (metro Line #2, Line #7, Exit #2) every Friday from 3pm to 4pm to have fun and use the language that they are learning in class. An easyMandarin language instructor guides Free Flow Friday and corrects students if needed.

Henk Nieuwenhuys, an easyMandarin student from the Netherlands, came to the first three Free Flow Friday sessions and said, “It was great to practice Chinese in a new environment, not using the book and just having a free flowing conversation. The other students spoke Chinese slowly so I could really understand what everyone was saying. It is great! “

During a two-day weekend excursion, students and staff from easyMandarin visited the beautiful San Shan Island located off the coast of Lake Tai (Chinese: 太湖, pinyin: “Tài hú” in pinyin, literally “Grande Lake”), one of the biggest lakes in China. The diverse group took a speed boat to the island where motor vehicles are not allowed and everyone rides bicycles or electric bikes to get around.

The action packed trip included mountain hiking, bike riding, and touring of the ancient town. Additionally, the group took a fishing boat around the islands to admire the awesome natural scenery. Students practiced their Chinese with local farmers, and enjoyed hearing about folklore while picking juicy tangerines off the trees and eating them. To top it off, the evening included a barbecue and camp fire (roasted marshmallows!), along with singing Chinese and Western songs!

Eric Pekar, an American law student from New York University (NYU) studying Mandarin in easyMandarin’s Intensive Small Group course said, “It was my first time leaving Shanghai and getting out of the big city. I really enjoyed seeing what other parts of China are really like. It was nice to get to use a bit of Chinese with the locals. I had a lot of fun!”

For many Westerners, chopsticks’ racing is a new thing. The goal is to use chopsticks to move peas from a plate into a cup. The first person to move all the peas wins. Surprisingly, France did very well at this game!
